The Library Mid-2014

Heather mentioned that she wanted to see pics of the library so, after a neatening up, here they are.

First, a shelfie.

Heather insists that the person isn't supposed to be in the pic, but I disagree. So there I am, next to one of my favorite shelves.

You'll notice that a hard copy of Skin Game (the newest book in the Dresden Feels Files series) is missing. This is because I'm waiting for my drug book drug dealer to ship a special copy of it to me. But we're holding off to see if she has something else super special for my collection. :D So I'm pretending to be patient.

Can you see the patience in my face? Yeah.

I thought I'd try two pics for the Wall of Books to give people a better chance to see what's actually on the shelves.

And part two.

Manga...manga everywhere! Also the books under the tv are destined for Goodwill. There's some dvd's in there too. I'm purging the dvd collection. This involves watching a lot of really bad movies.

DVDs I am keeping. Mine. ALL MINE.

A mix of DVDs I will keep and ones I haven't watched yet. So many movies.

Also, 'alphabetical' is a loose term when applied here. I group things how I want them. Like all the Lord of the Rings movies are with The Hobbit movies. Because reasons. Yes, I do own at least two copies of all of the LotR movies. Again, reasons.

COMICS! so many comics...and a little Darth Vader.

Manga in the corner by the bed. Always a hard shelf to get a pic of.

Manga...

Movies! Again, 'alphabetical'. All the MCU movies are together over here because Marvel Cinematic Universe. Otherwise they're all spread out and that's annoying. I know. I'm a special soul.

Bet you can't guess what these are!

Most of the 'Star-' fandoms represented right here. Also the good parts of Supernatural. Though the season finale this year gave me hope.

Torchwood. Let me tell you about Torchwood one day. When you have time to listen to me cursing the writers for Children of Earth. And some X-Men stuff. Which I mostly just watch for the Erik/Charles of it all. And Wolverine. Everyone loves Wolverine.

And the last of the shelves! Manga and the three video games I own! But look at that empty space there at the end of the shelf! I could buy more books!

Bonus: The books I am currently reading. It doesn't show up well on Hawkeye's screen thanks to the glare, but I'm reading 'Death By Black Hole' by Neil deGrasse Tyson. And a prize of your choice to anyone who can correctly guess what movie I'm watching. >:D
Also, to anyone who came here for serious posts and such, sorry! Yesterday was my birthday (I am an old, old woman now) and today I spent cleaning and enjoying my last vacation day. I promise to return to posts about the Gospel of John tomorrow, and to answer the comments I have. But I am tired tonight.

SO OLD. SO. OLD.

Dear self:

Stop reading BNF's tweets and thinking that they're talking about you in a bad way. And even if they are, who gives a shit?

If you annoy them or they don't like what you write, then they can fuck off and just not read your stuff.

Other people like it. Just because they're them doesn't mean shit. And they're probably not talking about you in the first place.

Also, you're going through caffeine withdrawals which are making you cranky and depressive. So, you know, huge grain of salt to your responses to things.

Boss

I am still convinced that the character Tom Kane is analogous to John Marcone. If Marcone became mayor of Chicago and then got a progressive, degenerative illness. I don't picture Kelsey Grammer *as* Marcone, physically. For that, see Gabriel Macht.

Go google him. I'll wait. Oh, no, I won't. Here:

You're welcome.

I think it's all the attitude. Here:

"If in the course of doing what I feel is best for this city there is collateral damage...So be it."

You tell me who said that. John Marcone or Tom Kane.

Both of them certainly could have and that's the awesome part.

And then there's the part where, having been handed a pair of severed ears in a really nice box by the guy whose ears they are he waits until he gets home to open it. Sees that it's the ears, goes 'eh' and puts them down the garbage disposal. Then tries to have an emotional moment with his wife.

His balls clank when he walks.

In other news, I clearly have a thing for the anti-hero type. Thankfully that's just my taste in fictional men!

*blows dust off*

Okay, Supernatural Friday is here!

I really meant to keep this blog up during the hiatus, but to be honest, I got distracted by the DF kinkmeme. I've got one AU series going (I'm on the fourth story which is unfinished at over 100 pages, with the fifth story in the planning stages), a sequel to another AU (which is dark and...and...slavefic people, slavefic. I have my weaknesses okay?) going, and I'm working on yet another AU series with a cowriter though none of those stories have been written or posted yet. We're still in the plotting/dividing up the stories stage. Plus all the other one shots I've written for the meme. I am an addict! No will power, none.

There's also the XMFC kinkmeme which I read, the Suits kinkmeme and the Thor kinkmeme.

Um. So I've been busy.

Anywho...

I've been neglecting my tv! I got my XMFC discs and my Thor discs like right in a row so I watched XMFC again (OMG, the deleted scene with Erik in drag is too funny, they should have left that in!) and cooed over how married Erik and Charles are. Then I watched Thor and wanted to cuddle Loki. I never even got into Thor in the comics, but now I'm fighting the urge to track down good Loki-centric stories. I *know* they won't be like the movie, but come on. It's LOKI. It has to be awesome by definition. And the Thor watching led me to rewatch both Iron Man movies and then watch Thor again. I don't have the Ed Norton The Hulk movie, so I couldn't watch that one.

My dvr is full of new shows to watch! Which is nice, since I'll be on vacation next week so I'll have new things to watch when I'm at home.

I did watch a couple things last night.

1. Necessary Roughness season finale (I told you I was behind!) - I don't care about sports so I didn't start watching this one from the beginning. I only picked it up for the last three eps because someone told me how good it was. And it is USA, which produces some really good shows. So I watched it, and I enjoyed. There was also the bonus of having Riley Finn (from Buffy), whose real name is Marc Blucas by the way. The season finale cliffhanger thing, meh. Saw it coming. It was obvious, though I do hope that T.K. will be okay because his character did grown on me. And Nico, bless his paranoid little heart. I loved the way he dealt with the whole divided loyalties, the fact that the woman he loves has been manipulating him and the question of 'who gets Nico in the divorce' thing.

2. Ringer - I've only watched the first ep so far. SMG, I still love you. I think they dumped too much into the first ep, honestly. We already knew the basic idea from the articles and commercials, so I get that they didn't feel the need to draw it out in the reveal of the big surprise (Siobhan's alive!), but I think they'd have been better served with a slightly slower pace in having all the reveals for how Siobhan's a rotten bitch. I'm going to keep watching because I did enjoy it, but we'll see. Also, Ioan Gruffold. I <3 you. So much.

3. The Playboy Club - I gave up Hawaii 5-0 for this. Well, to be able to watch this *and* Castle. I'll catch H50 in reruns over the summer. I'm pretty much loving this show. The killing was well done, the interference from the mob is interesting, as is David Krumholtz as the manager for the Playboy Club. So very different from his adorable Charlie character from Numb3rs. The side story that they introduced is fascinating me even with the little bit that we've been given. One of the Bunnies (whose name I cannot recall) is 'married' to a homosexual man. She herself, it is hinted, is a lesbian. They're living this way (with his lover? I'm not sure if he's living there or was just visiting) since homosexuality is still illegal at the time. And running a secret meeting of other lesbian and gay (I doubt they'll go into bi, transgender or anything else due to the time period, but I could be wrong!) people for support/lobbying for change? We don't know details yet, but I am fascinated. Tell me more...

4. Castle - I'll be honest. I can't tell you who killed the victim on this show because I wasn't paying that much attention. I was reading a really good fill on the Thor kinkmeme about a Loki who's been playing both sides for years (he's just a villain because, well, he's Loki, but he really doesn't want to kill his brother or his brother's friends. So he helps them by playing with the other villains and not telling the heroes because where would the fun be in that?), but then a robot built by one of his little proteges sucks out all of his magic and it's working (sort of) with the Avengers and SHIELD to stop the robot!Loki who is really trying to kill the Avengers to prove his superiority to the original Loki and it's really good people! And I'm just really watching for the Castle/Beckitt interaction. I watch for the characters, not so much the story. And I am unsurprised by anything that happened in the first ep of the season.

And that's about it. Tonight will be Supernatural night! *pumps fist in the air*

I wish more people I know read the Dresden Files. I have this urge to start a book club kind of thing with only the DF as material! Because I want to analyse them over and over again. Which, okay, I do that anyway, all on my own.

Whatever.

Don't judge me.

Is it next year yet?

In other news: the world needs more Marcone. This is a fact. Marcone needs his own series!

Ghost Story

I'll be over here. Grinning like a loon and trying to figure out all the implications of everything that I just read.

In ongoing news, Jim Butcher = actually evil. But in such a delightful way we keep coming back for more.

I saw someone speculate, jokingly, that Butcher was really a Wampire and that he fed on our emotions as we waited for and then read his books. I'm not so sure it's a joke anymore...

Now...how long until Cold Days is released?

AND IN SPOILERY, BUT ONLY A BIT NEWS:

DEMONREACH = AWESOME

And Harry, you're a psychotic ass sometimes. Really. I just...the thing with Molly? Yeah. Not cool. Like Mr. Sunshine said, saying 'let the world burn' is a hell of a lot different from saying 'let Molly burn', especially when they amount to the same thing!

In other news, Lea is still too cool for words.

And I want to know what the hell HWWB was doing with Harry! What are his PLANS!?!!?

Cripes. The flashbacks to Justin and the training...*makes grabby hands*

self control. i do not have it.

I will not stalk the local bookstore in hopes that they will put Ghost Story out early.

I will also not get my friend to get her nephew to try and get me a copy. Even though he works there and you know damn well they have them. Right there. In the back. In a box. With no one reading them. *whimpers*

I will NOT read spoilers. I won't. I will be strong!

Damn all of you who have read it!

*runs off to stalk the internet for spoilers*

Camp NaNo

Turns out I'm not writing the fill for that prompt I mentioned. Though I'm holding on to that for maybe later.

I decided to do the sequel to another long fill I did called Lost in a Life, where the punishment for breaking the Laws isn't death, but being enslaved by a collar. Harry kills Justin, etc. and winds up eventually being bought by Marcone. The original prompt was for dubcon, but the fill was definitely noncon (in the sense that Harry *couldn't* say no), with mindfuckery, etc. So now I'm writing the sequel to that, where things happen four years after the first one ended and Harry gets part of his control back and John has to deal with that and the fact that stockholm goes both way and then I'm throwing Hendricks in the mix so it's going to wind up as a threesome. *headdesk*

tl:dr - slave au's are awesome and I'm writing more of one

TWO THINGS! Both Dresden Files related, god help us all...

1 - There's a Camp NaNo this year. So...uh...I'm doing that? WTH. Pretty sure it'll be this prompt from the kinkmeme: 'Ever since I read With or Without, I've been obsessing about the following:

"My dreams, every night since I'd seen Thomas were...they were filled with Marcone. And not the old one, the one where Marcone drugged me and locked me up in a tiny cell beneath his mansion until I broke."

I really, really want to read about Marcone drugging Harry and locking him up in a tiny cell beneath his mansion until he broke. Gen is good, Marcone/Harry is better.'

I'd originally thought to split off from canon toward the end of Fool Moon, but someone commented suggesting the end of the train scene in Death Masks. And...I like it. So probably that.

2 - TALK ME OFF THE LEDGE! I'm considering buying my copy of Ghost Story and getting it signed through the Dog Eared Books Virtual Signing. Which would mean that the copy of the book would cost me about $35 instead of $14. Keeping in mind that I'm also buying the book on Kindle for $14 and audiobook for $30. So I don't need it signed, right? Right?

3 MONTHS

Until Ghost Story comes out. What? Like you aren't counting down the days too. You know you are. Don't lie.

Something I didn't notice until recently: the cover art for Ghost Story really does have Harry's headstone on it. The one Bianca gave him. This pleases me. :D

Today is a good day

I'm going to the bookstore, so yay!

Also, NEW SUPERNATURAL RETURNS TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ALERT THE MEDIA, PEOPLE!

Also, I seem to have created a verse, in the Dresden Kinkmeme. And it's het. I mean, I sort of have another verse, with the Bad Angel series, but that's slash and dark and, you know, more me. So how the hell did this other thing happen?

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The first three chapters of Ghost Story will be released tomorrow, with chapters 4 and 5 following one week apart.

Yet Another Moar Dresden Files Thoughts Post

I finished Changes. The question of who was shouting fuego is not answered. I maintain the possibility that it was future!Harry.

This bit kills me, every time:

"I put my left hand over her eyes.

I pressed my mouth to hers, swiftly, gently, tasting the blood, and her tears, and mine.

I saw her lips form the word, 'Maggie...'

And I...

I used the knife.

I saved a child.

I won a war.

God forgive me."

Dear lord, Butcher.

Thinkies:

Allusion to What's Coming Next: "Finally, it made the books in the supernatural community as the night of bad dreams. Before the next sunset, the Paranet was buzzing with activity, with men and women scattered over half the world communicating about the vivid and troubling dreams they'd had. Pregnant women and mothers who had recently delivered had been hardest hit. Several had to be hospitalized and sedated. But everyone with a smidge of talent who was sleeping at the time was troubled by dreams. The general theme was always the same: dead children. The world in flames. Terror and death spreading across the globe in an unstoppable wave, destroying anything resembling order or civilization."

The Fomor. Which we didn't know about until Even Hand came out and then Aftermath. BUTCHER! *shakes hand in the air in frustration* Anyone else think this whole thing is just a part of their evol plans? Yeah. I know. Not a stretch. But how awesome is it that they've been manipulating things since the beginning?

Aftermath - I hadn't read it until now. I'm only about halfway through, so we'll leave analysis until later. But I have two things.

A) Marcone is fucking awesome. All the time. And he takes shit from no magical being who is not Harry Dresden. You sir, are not Harry Dresden. Attend.

B) This description of Harry from Murphy's point of view: "Watching Dresden operate was usually one of two things: mildly amusing or positively terrifying. One a scene, his whole personal manner always made me think of autistic kids. He never met anyone's eyes for more than a flickering second. He moved with the sort of exaggerated caution of someone who was several sizes larger than normal, keeping his hands and arms in close to his body. He spoke a little bit softly, as if apologizing for the resonant baritone of his voice.

"But when something caught his attention, he changed. His dark, intelligent eyes would glitter, and his gaze became something so intense that it could start a fire. During the situations that changed from investigation to desperate struggle, his whole being shifted in the same way. His stance widened, become more aggressive and confident, and his voice rose up to become a ringing trumpet that could have been clearly heard from opposite ends of a football stadium.

"Quirky nerd, gone. Terrifying icon, present."

Yet Moar Dresden Files Thoughts

Really only the one. Not so convoluted as the previous linking. And not quite as wacky as my theory that Martha Liberty is Harry's grandmother. (Also, pretty sure Jim has said something that makes me just flat out wrong on that one, but I live in the tiny sliver of possibility here!)

I'm right in the middle of the battle at the end of Changes. The Grey Council has shown up and is kicking ass. And in the middle of it all, Harry hears someone further up on the pyramid using 'fuego' and feels sort of upset that 'someone was fuego-ing and it wasn't me'. Now, I haven't finished the reread, so maybe this is all nothing. But who was using Harry's spell?

IIRC, each wizard chooses their own 'made up' or ancient language to cast the spells in. Something that they don't actually understand so that they can assign value to the terms and add an extra layer of insulation between their minds and the stress of the spellcasting. So far, I believe that each wizard we've seen has their own spell language. Yes, they can cast other peoples' spells, but they tend not to. And if they do they tend to cast the spell using their own spell language. So who the hell was using Harry's fire spell?

Wacky theory of the day: It was Harry from the future.

We know that, at some point, Harry will break each Law of Magic. No time travel is on there. Don't ask me how or why, but I think future!Harry Showed Up too.

Of course, if I keep reading and it gets explained, then that's all out the window. We'll fuego that bridge when I get there.

Guess what I just did.

Guess.

Did you guess that I just took off July 26th from work so I could read Ghost Story right away?

If you did, you'd be right.

I'm not obsessed. Not.

Do you think it'll hit Murdock at 12:01 that morning?

Ghost Story Theory - SPOILERS FOR SO MANY THINGS

I know the whole blog is tagged as non-spoiler safe space, and sanil is busy with school so the chances of her seeing this and reading it are slim, but I can't remember how far into the series she's read, so I WARN.

DON'T READ BEYOND THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ EVERYTHING CURRENTLY PUBLISHED AND/OR DON'T WANT TO KNOW SOME OF THE TIDBITS WE'VE LEARNED ABOUT GHOST STORY!

I MEAN IT!

I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING BEYOND THIS POINT!

Right then. So, in WoJ notes, we learn that the runes/sigils/markings on the lighthouse/keepers house on Demonreach that we see in Turn Coat are related to/the same as some from the Welcome to the Jungle comic. The only ones I can think of that Harry doesn't use himself are the ones that the Hecatean was using on her file cabinet. Those, which Harry knows enough about to understand what they're fore are described as being preservative. Making the cabinet a magical fridge, sort of kind of.

Harry spends most of a year dead, and then comes back at the end of Ghost Story. Demonreach is at the end of Ghost Story. Somehow, Harry's body is preserved well enough that his soul/spirit can be put back in it and not be all icky and zombie-esque.

So. Harry's body is being stored in the keeper's house on Demonreach. Mab is also keeping all of Chicago really freaking cold, to help things along, but the magic on the house is doing most of the job.

Musical Accompaniment

Just started the reread of Changes. My timing would have been *perfect* for the original release date of Ghost Story. But I'm okay with it! Really!

I've decided that the Linkin Park song Waiting for the End is perfect for the end of Changes.

Lyrics:

This is not the end, this is not the beginning
Just a voice like a riot rocking every revision
But you listen through the tone and the violent rhythm and
Though the words sound steady, something empty's within 'em
We say yeah / with fists flying up in the air
Like we're holding onto something that's invisible there
'Cause we're living at the mercy of the pain and fear
Until we dead it / forget it / let it all disappear

Waiting for the end to come / wishing I had strength to stand
This was not what I had planned
It's out of my control
Flying at the speed of light / thoughts were spinning in my head
So many things were left unsaid
It's hard to let you go

I know what it takes to move on
I know how it feels to lie
All I want to do is trade this life for something new
Holding on to what I haven't got

Sitting in an empty room / Trying to forget the past
This was never meant to last
I wish it wasn't so

What was left when that fire was gone
I thought it felt right but that right was wrong
All caught up in the eye of the storm
And trying to figure out what it's like moving on
And I don't even know what kind of things I said
My mouth kept moving and my mind went dead so
Picking up the pieces now where to begin
The hardest part of ending is starting again

*headdesk*

I have the sudden desire to build a miniature version of Harry's apartment and lab in the vein of Victorian dollhouses and then put tiny things in them.
