Ah kitties will eat them!!!! Most rodents prefer to be in pairs. Males are usually better tempered. Don't get two females. They don't like each other. Is there a room in your house that the cats don't go? I know they're cats they go everywhere but its a valid question haha
I know, that's why I'm waiting for a little while.
My only experience with having two male rodents is when I had two male hamsters. One of them ate the other one. Sooo...yeah. But I'm going to read up on rats so I know what I'm doing.
My bedroom is actually the most cat free room in the house. Right now our oldest cat is the chief resident, but when she dies it will become a (well, as much as I can make it) cat free zone so I can have my rats in happiness and safety.
Is your older cat still able to jump high? You might be able to put the rats in a high place.
BTW Don't read White Smoke by Andrew Greeley. Its slow and kind of boring. I'm a good 280 pgs of 325 in and I'm so bored. It should have been a 200 page book. Its well written, but its too slow.
It's hit or miss, actually. She can jump up on the bathroom counter when she really wants to, but most of the time she cries for me to pick her up to put her up there. And she doesn't jump on my bed anymore so much as reach up, sink her claws into the mattress and then pull herself up. But then sometimes she jumps. *shrug* She's a cat, she does what she wants. :)
Incidentally I saw a video the other day of a cat and rat that were friends, but I think that is quite unique and they would have had to grow up together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ikm3o5hDks
Aw, I love rats! Mr Sanil doesn't and we have 2 cats, so I'm not going to get any, but I've always kind of wanted one. They can do tricks! They're very smart and you can teach them to do things like play basketball, and they ride around on your shoulder! There are even tiny little harnesses and leashes to take them for a walk!
I've been informed by family and friends that those things aren't so much "adorable" as "horrifying." Other people are weird.
Rats have a terrible reputation in the general public, mostly because we think of them as 'vermin' and associated with the plague, etc. I think. But pet rats are very clean and clever and so freaking cute!
Awwww
ReplyDeleteI know! Such a cutie!

Thanks for the warning. :)

ReplyDeleteYeah, my cat would definitely at least try to 'play' with a rat. It's okay though, I'm patient. :)
