You May Live in the South, But You're Never Southern

Unless you were born here.

It is just a fact of life.

There are subtle hints (aside from accents and lack of proper manners) that let everyone know no matter how acclimated you are to the culture you're not 'one of us'.

Dislike of grits is one of them.

Grits are *GOOD*. Fried or regular. Plain or cheese. Grits yay!

  1. What do you think of say Southern parents having a child who was born in France or Japan or even Michigan because they were in the military or at school?

OR what is more frequent...a Northern couple moving here and having children?

Are either of those considered Southern? Or is it based solely on being born in the South?

    Cute post,by the way!

  2. :P

I should have said 'and raised', shouldn't I?

Unless the parents make a concerted effort to raise their child in the Southern culture as much as they can while living somewhere else, the child will be brought up in the culture they're surrounded by. So a child born to Southern parents being raised in France, Japan, or this strange Michigan place you mention will be culturally like the people around them with a smattering of the Southern culture of their parents.

A child of Northern parents born and raised in the South will be Southern with a smattering of the parents' Northern culture.

  3. I will agree with you on all points, except one: Grits are disgusting. Pegged. ;-)

    Thus is my point proven!

You just haven't had the right grits is my personal theory. ;-)

I love it! Yep, cheese grits are one of the most basic essentials in life. And sweet tea. Not that wimpy crap they make up north. If they make it. But STRONG and SUPER sweet! ^_^

LOL, right grits. This is true. My brother doesn't like grits. I think he's either a fairy-child or a Martian.

Seriously, why do people bother making any tea other than sweet? *blech* Weirdos....

I'm voting Martian for your brother!

    1. Unsweet tea is sacrilege!

And my brother IS a Martian. One day I'll catch him before he puts his human make up on. Green skin...
