Name Changing...

So, as some might be aware, the man I call 'Dad' on here is not, in fact, my father. He's technically my step-father.

My Baby Sis and I still have the last name of my adoptive father (who I refer to as step-father or giant flaming jackass, depending on my mood...) who is her natural father.

My mother has brought up that she would like us to change our last names to Dad's.

Now, I don't really have any problem with that, I've been trying to get rid of G.F.J.'s last name for *years* but Mom asked me not to because she wanted my sister and I to have the same last name.

I'm just...do you think it's weird? She wants to do this as sort of a surprise 'Christmas present'. So, of course, in that vein, we can't *ask* him what he thinks, or it'd stop being a 'surprise'.

  1. Oh I dunno if it should be a surprise. What if he isn't comfortable with it? Of course if it would make YOU feel better, then maybe you should consider it.

  2. In my opinion, this is NOT the sort of thing to do as a surprise for a Christmas present.

Change your name if you want to, to whatever you want...but don't take your Dad's name on as a way to surprise him.

  3. LK,

See, that's my concern. Not that I think he'd have a problem with it, but...I'm just not comfortable with it being a 'surprise'.

While I'd *love* to be able to be shot of everything from my stepfather, it won't, really, make me feel any different. I consider Dad to be my dad, and a last name doesn't change a thing.

  4. Alana,

That's what I was thinking. I've got no problem changing last names, but it's not really the sort of thing one should do as a surprise, really, I think.

I shall have to have a talk with Mom, then.
