Favorite Childhood Books

I was looking at Susanne's blog and saw on her blog list a blog entry with the title 'My favorite childhood books'. It's over on Bridget of Arabia's blog, which is not one that I read, but you know, books! So I wandered over to check it out. And it made me remember *my* favorite books from when I was a kid. So here we go, in no particular order!

1. The Nancy Drew Mystery Series - I loved these stories. I still do. I have the entire original set, in the shiny yellow hard covers. I wanted to *be* Nancy Drew. But I always thought of myself as a Bess. The slightly curvy friend who was true blue and helpful, but not necessarily brave. :)

2. Little House on the Prairie - Again, love. Love, love, love. This is where my love of living 'back in the day' came from, I'm certain. I wanted to live with the Ingalls' and just...have their life. It was just all so much more interesting than my boring life!

3. Dracula - No, really. I read it as a kid, and I loved it. And the rest is history!

4. Bunnicula - He's a vampire bunny! What's not to love?

5. Bridge to Terabithia - Oh, this was the first book I read where I put it down and never read it again. Not because it was bad, but because it was so emotionally moving and touching and I carry around the pain and love I felt for this book still.

6. The Hatchet - It's a survival story. It's wonderful and engrossing. One of those books you read under the covers after you've been told lights out because you just can't put it down.

7. The Egypt Game - It's a kids book and a cute story and then all of a sudden it's not anymore.

8. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Pirates! Submarines! Giant squid! It's a classic for a reason, people!

There's more, but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment...

  1. OMG BUNNICULA! The Celery Stalks at Midnight, Howliday Inn...can't forget those books EVER.

I still have a soft spot for The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankwiler.

  3. Did you watch the movie version of Bridge to Terabithia? It was pretty decent...sometimes weird, I couldn't tell when it was supposed to take place. At first I thought it was a little older, like when the book actually takes place, then AnnaSophia Robb walks in all Avril-flavored punk, then a teacher with zero boundaries makes me think it's the 70s or so...yeah. But really, pretty good movie. The book was also good, obviously. But I find myself more able to watch the movie over again than I am able to read the book...even if I do still break down and cry a lot every time.

I used to read Nancy Drew. I never actually had any of them, though. I had a few Mandie books the church gave away as prizes sometimes (Christian Nancy Drew, takes place maybe around the same time as Anne of Green Gables?), and a few of the Hardy Boys books..more of the new series than the shiny blue hardcovers. Sad, the older ones are a lot better. But the new paperback ones much cheaper.

  4. LK,

I have to remember to get the Bunnicula books for when I have kids! They were great!

Oh! I forgot to mention the Encyclopedia Brown books! Your Mixed Up Files reminded me!

  5. sanil,

I did not. I didn't want to possibly ruin a great childhood memory.

I haven't read the book in years, but it was so freaking heartbreaking as a kid! I think it was the first book I read that had death in it.

I've never heard of Mandie. I read Anne of Green Gables, though it wasn't a fave. Oh, the Hardy Boys. I liked them too!

  7. slice,

Hah! The only SVH books I read were the ones that had a weird vampire story in them. I thought they were way too soap opera-y for me. :)

*facepalm* The SVH books are ruining America's reputation! :D

  9. Ooooh I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVED The Little House on the Prairie when I was a kid! As in I was obsessed, and when they showed the final episode of the TV show on the Danish channel (when I was about 11) I went up to my room and cried. I wanted to BE Laura... and I was always getting my sister to play "Laura and blind Mary" - including tying scarves over my eyes so I couldn't see and walk around the house like that.

I also really liked Anne of Green Gables, and I read a TON of horse books.

  10. :D Did you ever get to see the tv show they made of it with Michael Landon? It was good too. Not as good as the books, but I loved it!

I always wanted to be Laura, because she was such a tomboy. :D

Black Beauty. Weren't there sequels to that....hang on. Hmmm. No. But there is another series about horses that I loved. But I can't remember what it was called...

  11. YES I loved that show! even though it is pretty different from the books, but that's usually what happens with these shows.

I'm pretty certain there's no sequel to Black Beauty (loved that book as well), but there were like 15-20 books in the series that started with The Black Stallion, I think they were written by a guy who's last name was Farley or something like that.
