It's Not Personal

I've noticed something about some of the people I work with lately. Quite a high percentage of them seem to believe that everything that happens is an attack on them, somehow. And not just in the work environment, but the world at large. It doesn't even necessarily have to be a *bad* thing, but if something changes, they take it as an attack! I don't understand this mentality. The world is not out to get you. You might think it is, but that's paranoia. The world is not personally invested in your life, good or bad. It functioned without you for millions of years, and will continue to do so once you're gone. It doesn't have feelings. It doesn't want to crush you into the dirt. People might, but chances are that you haven't done anything to incite a blood vendetta in others against you. I could be wrong, but the likelihood of someone doing everything they can to ruin your life is not high.

People do thoughtless things. Accidents happen. It is not all a conspiracy to drive you to despair. Things happen. Random, awful things sometimes. But random wonderful things too. It's all a matter of your outlook on life as to whether or not you see only the bad, only the good, or the realistic mix of the two.

And the world does not revolve around you.

I know this because it revolves around me. So there.

  1. Noooooo, nononononononono! The world revolves around ME! I thought you knew this by now! *I* am Captain Awesome, remember? ;)

I love your stories from work. Or should I say "lessons learned from work"?

  2. Susanne,

You may be Captain Awesome, but *I* am the Center of the Universe! How else would I be able to grant you the title of Captain Awesome if I were not more powerful than you? Huh? Huh?

My work is like a group of toddlers given computers and playing dress up. It's both amusing and traumatic.
